Blogging has become a very popular activity, for businesses as well as individuals. If you're interested in blogging, you'll want to know exactly what a 'blog' is.

Think of a blog as an instant-publishing Web site. It's a site in a chronological format, so that as new items are added to the blog, they push older items down the web page.

Your aim in creating a blog is readers, as many readers as possible - thousands a day. Thousands of readers translate into dollars, because you can sell to those readers.

Here are five blogging tips that will help you to create a successful blog:

1. Create a specific focus for your blog

Your blog needs to be about something specific, so choose a topic to blog about. Choose any topic about which you have some knowledge, and about which you can write, such as photography, weight loss, or parenting.

2. Write your blog items in a casual, friendly way

A blog is casual communication. Write as if you were writing email messages to a friend. Don't use long words if you can help it. Just 'speak' on your blog - be informal, even if you're writing a business blog.

3. Decide how often you will blog

Many readers will subscribe to your blog, so give them something to read as often as you can. Decide how often you'll write. In the early months of blogging, write often. You're building up your content so that new readers will find you via the search engines.

4. Think about your readers: what do they want to know about your topic?

The Web is a mass of information. However, you can win regular readers to your blog if you make your information useful. Remember to stick to your blog's topic, it's essential. If you're tempted to wander off-topic, don't, because if you do, you will disappoint your readers.

5. Your blog is a conversation: encourage comments

Think of your blog as a conversation with your readers. Ask readers to leave comments, by asking them questions. You can then respond to the comments they leave.
