Getting Your Book from Your Computer to the Bookshelves
The steps to publishing a book are really quite simple to achieve. Believe it or not, understanding how to market your book effectively is the best way to ensure that it will be read ... widely read. This article explains how to become published.

Are you sitting on a literary goldmine? Not sure how to publish your book? Books, pun intended, have been written on the subject, but here is a view of the forest for the trees.

Before you set out to sell your book all across the land, make sure that you have a clear business goal in mind. You may be asking yourself, 'what does business have to do with selling my book?' Unbelievably, understanding how to market your book effectively is the best way to ensure that it will be read ... widely read. Once you understand your target audience (those people who you can picture reading your book), you will then be able to climb the steps to publishing a book.

Create your own business plan, and put this plan into action immediately. If you decide to publish your own book, you will need to know how to sell yourself. Within your business plan, include costs (mailing, publishing, future expenses, marketing). Also, make sure that you include a decent amount of funding for publicity; in order for people to buy your book, they must know about it (so, get ready to set up shop inside a bookstore for a few hours of signing).

In fact, almost all of the steps to publishing a book wind up in one general category - 'selling'. That's right, selling. Sell yourself, sell the book, sell your name, and sell your entire concept. When you search for the right publisher, do not disregard smaller bookstores and other book sale venues. You may even consider selling a few books at a craft show! Of course, you will have to play the part too, so teach yourself how to become personable - or, have someone else market your book for you.

Many authors are under the impression that a publishing house will sell a book for them. While this may be slightly true, publishing companies will not work as hard as you will. Why? To put it simply, you want to see your name in lights, and a publishing house wants to add your name to their list of authors. In short, you will do everything within your power to sell your book, but a publishing house will only put in part of the effort.

Remember, the steps to publishing a book are really quite simple to achieve. You must know your audience; you must know how to sell your book; and you must spend a lot of time getting the word out there. Though all of this may seem like hard work, just think of the pride that you will feel when you are a best-selling author.
