How to Coax Google AdSense to Display Correctly Targeted Ads

   By Kathy Steinemann

You cannot be successful at earning money from the Google AdSense program unless the ads shown are of interest to your visitors. Optimizing your website involves more than slapping up a few pages with haphazardly placed AdSense code. Here is why.

Many webmasters earn an excellent living by signing up for Google AdSense and displaying targeted ads to their visitors. However, to get a high click through rate for Google ads (and more money) the advertisements served must be interesting to website visitors.

Hypothetical Case Study

Tom has a website about AdSense optimization, but the Google ads shown to his visitors are about scientific breakthroughs. Why would this happen?

Here is a breakdown of Tom's website:

1. His domain is edisons-science-of-adsense.com.

2. The title of his home page, in a large, bold font, is 'Tom Edison's Scientific AdSense Approach'.

3. The description meta-tag on every page reads 'The science of AdSense is not a collection of scientific theories that you have to be an Albert Einstein to understand. The rules and algorithms are ordered and relatively predictable. My name is Tom Edison (no relation to the famous inventor, shown to the left). My website will prove to you how easy it is to optimize for AdSense.

4. His opening paragraph, which is the first text on the page after the heading, is the same as the description meta-tag in Step 3.

5. He displays a photo of Thomas Alva Edison, and the alt tag reads 'Thomas Alva Edison - Scientist and Inventor'.

There is no need to analyze any further. No matter what else Tom says on his page, Google has already made some important decisions. Take a look at some of the keywords in the domain name, home page title, meta description, bold type heading, image alt tag, and intro paragraph:

tom edison science scientific approach edisons scientific theories albert einstein rules algorithms ordered relatively famous inventor scientist thomas alva edison

If someone threw all those words at you and asked you to write an essay, you would likely zero in on science as the focal topic.

What can Tom do to improve the context of his Google AdSense ads?

The Solution

1. Tom already has his domain name - but he can register a more appropriate name and use domain forwarding to redirect existing links to the new domain. Something like adsense-advertising-how.to would be better.

2. A more suitable home page title would be 'AdSense Advertising - How to Optimize your Website'.

3. Here is a better description meta-tag: 'AdSense optimization for the Internet is not just a job for SEO experts. We provide hundreds of free tips and complimentary articles that will help you earn money from your Google-optimized website.' Note the keywords and the reduction in description size to just under 200 characters.

4. His intro can repeat the meta-description, with added information in extra paragraphs.

5. A better graphic would be a light bulb with an alt tag that reads 'Great Ideas for AdSense Optimization'.

Here are some of the keywords that Google now sees:

adsense advertising how to optimize website optimization Internet SEO experts free tips complimentary articles earn money Google-optimized website

If you had to write an essay based on the keywords above, it would likely be about AdSense optimization and SEO techniques.

Remember: Google uses computers for its indexing and real-time Internet decision-making. Whenever you look at a web page, analyze it by reading the source code (starting from the top) to see what the Googlebot sees. The result will be a more streamlined, AdSense-friendly, bot-friendly website.
