You may be the best person for the job, but the fact is you will never even get an interview in the first place, unless your resume is good.

You should design your resume to show off your skills, experience, and qualifications - in fact, any information that relates to the job for which you are applying. It is also well worth including any awards or successes in your particular field.

There are several things that most employers really dislike seeing on a resume. Most people believe that interviewers do not read all of a resume. Here is a secret - they actually do! Here are a few of the essential things that you should pay attention to on your resume.

  • Use easy and simple fonts. Fancy fonts and colors are not eye catching in the manner that you likely want them to be. Yours will become a 'how-to' on making CV errors.

  • Major gaps in your employment history leave a recruiter wondering about your work ethic. Be prepared to answer questions if you have such gaps in yours.

  • Dating the information in your work history in the wrong order makes your resume harder to follow. (You should list work history with the most current jobs at the top)

  • Pictures and/or graphics on a resume are distracting to a recruiter. Things like that will likely get it tossed out without a glance.

  • The golden rule of resumes is never to lie. Often if an employer is unsure, they will check the facts themselves. If your potential employer catches you in an untruth, you will prove that you are untrustworthy.
