While millions of people ride on public transportation every day, it is a good idea to stay alert. If you are a women, having a personal alarm or pepper spray for protection is a good idea. You can carry a lipstick with pepper spray or a cell phone with a personal alarm. They now have a very large selection to choose from, so no one will ever know it is protection for you.
Safety on the Train
We often see the same people on the train daily, so do not be afraid to make friends. You can watch out for one another.
Never get on the last car; you need to stay with other people just in case. The last car is away from everything.
Keep all your personal items next to you, either on your lap or behind you.
While standing on the train, always try to keep your back to the wall of the train if possible.
When you get onto the train, look around and check for the emergency cord or any help button. Should you ever need it, you will know where it is before it is too late.
While waiting for the train, do not start talking on your cell phone. People who intend to attack you know that you are a great target. Get off the phone and stay alert.
If you ever feel like something is not safe, wait for a stop that is busy and get off, or change your seat. Please do not get off a stop where no one is.
Bus Stop Safety Tips
Know when the bus is coming; call the bus center and check on the route for your area. Never go out to the bus stop at night if you might have a long wait.
Traveling during the day is OK. However, at night make sure you sit up front by the driver. If the driver knows you will be taking that bus most nights, he or she will keep an eye out for you.
Safety in a Cab
When calling a cab, ask for the driver's name. Before getting in, ask the driver what his or her name is. If it is not the name the cab company gave you, say, 'OK, thanks I am waiting for someone,' just for a little extra protection.
It is a good idea to have your money and keys ready when the cab arrives. You should not be digging into your bag looking for something. You will not be alert.
If your gut tells you to get out, just ask the driver to pull over on a busy street and get out. The worst that could happen is that you have to walk a little bit, but it is better that becoming a victim.
If you travel on public transportation often, you may already be aware of these tips. It is always a good idea to be ready just in case. Carry a pepper spray or a personal alarm on your key chain. There is also a great ring pepper spray available. It is worth the modest investment.
