Starting an online business has become one of the wider used avenues to earn a better income.

However, working online for someone else, like taking part in surveys, filling out forms, etc., and starting your own online business are two different scenarios.

Having your own online business has lots of appeal:

  • You are your own boss.

  • You can work flexible hours.

  • Only a computer and an Internet connection are your costs.

  • All that you earn is yours; your profits are not divided.

However, it is not all wonderful. Having your own online business also carries risks. Therefore, before starting, you need to establish the following

    a. How many hours can you dedicate?

Are you in it for full time i.e. 6 - 8 hours? If yes, then what is your alternate income in case things do not work out.? If you are considering part time work, then you need to know the exact number of hours you can dedicate, and take into account the days you cannot work. Since this is your own business, you need to put in the extra effort to make it profitable.

    b. Do you want to market a product or a service?

If you want to market a product or a service, it is essential that you understand the market scenario. Who are your competitors? Is the market saturated? Is there room for one more player?

If you are selling a product: Is it a tangible product or a virtual one? If it is a tangible product, you will need to have storage space and carry inventory. You will also need to understand and process packaging and shipping. That is time-consuming.

If you are selling a virtual product like downloaded videos, eBooks, etc. then you don't need storage space and will save time with packaging and shipping - but you will still need to have a website with features like credit card processing fees, etc. Selling virtual products is much easier, and is widely used for online business.

Selling a service is a tougher option. You need to be good at web designing, graphic designing, or writing. Some of these services can be outsourced. You can look at the various options available, and then choose one depending on the amount of time required as well as the skills needed.

Online investments are also a good way of making more dollars. Investing in shares, stocks, etc. has become a big business. You can get help from many investors who are very knowledgeable about the volatile market. However, you need to be careful - as the prices can drop anytime.

    Remember

Online business is a source of income, therefore you are accountable for taxes. So plan and monitor your accounts properly to save yourself a lot of grief in the end. Always keep it legal by having a business name, full accounting for business transactions, and back-up files.

The most important personal qualities for any business, be it online or not, are enthusiasm, dedication and self-discipline. You will need to dedicate much more time in the early stages of your business.
There will be times when the returns may be few and far between, but constant commitment will grant you great results.

An online business can be rewarding if it is done in the right manner.
