With today's ever-expanding waistlines, the obesity epidemic is growing at an alarmingly rapid pace. The Western World seems to have one of the biggest problems. Being overweight can leave you with a multitude of obesity-related health problems. Being overweight can leave you with a multitude of obesity-related health problems. In medical speak, if you have a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or more, then you are considered obese. Now, that feels like an awful label to own. You determine your BMI by assessing your height and weight and then comparing those two numbers. The proportion of height to weight makes up your BMI. Guess what, the higher the number, the more at risk you are for obesity-related health issues. The condition of obesity simply means that you have too much fat! Wow! That is a simple concept to grasp. If we keep it up, the obesity problem is going to become an obesity epidemic. The health concerns related to obesity are obvious. It puts an incredible amount of strain and pressure on the joints. Over time, obesity will actually cause so much pressure on the joints that they can actually break down, leaving you with arthritis and lots of pain. Make no mistake, as your weight issues worsen and your body mass increases, your body is going to start screaming! Your body will begin to struggle to combat the pressure from the extra weight. Of course, as your body rebels, you will become less and less active, leading to more weight gain. What an awful cycle to get into. Beyond the everyday strain that you put on the joints by being obese, lack of activity and generally poor eating habits will also cause strain to the heart and the blood vessels - resulting in high blood pressure, a higher risk of stroke, and other circulatory health issues. Obesity can also lead to sleep apnea, which is the temporary cessation of breathing during sleep. Once the body reaches a state of obesity, the ability to reverse the trend is difficult. By this time, it is usually not just a battle against the weight problem, but also a battle for one's self-esteem and confidence. You can overcome obesity, but it takes patience and a long-term approach - not just a new 'latest' diet. If you have traveled to an obese state, the first place to start your journey back to a recognizable weight is with your physician. Take the time to discuss your weight and your plan to reclaim your body. Be sensible and realistic, and work with your doctor as it pertains to both your dietary eating habits and any type of newly found physical activity. Obesity did not happen overnight and neither will your weight loss. However, you can regain your health and gain control over your weight issues if you make up your mind that you are going to do it. The obesity epidemic is definitely here, but you do not have to contribute to it so heavily!
