As the world changes, we are starting to give some thought to the impact that we as a society have on the world. One development from this is the concept of green building. First the Industrial, and now the Technological Revolution have made our lives much more comfortable. These advances have turned us into a massive consumption society. With consumption comes waste, which is now impacting us as well.

The idea that our way of life may be bad for both the planet and ourselves is not new. Although climate change is a big issue now, we have been confronted with the problem before. From toxic rivers to overwhelming smog problems, we know of the issues with waste. Looking around us today, smog seems a rather small problem. Our world is getting hotter. With this will come changes. Weather will become more severe, and water is forecast to become scarce.

In the climate change debate, a key fact is often lost. There is no debate that the planet is getting hotter. What is disputed is the cause of this heating. Is this a natural phenomenon of some sort, perhaps a cyclical event, or is it our waste that is the cause? You may or may not believe emissions from our way of life are the cause of climate change. What is clear is that we not helping the problem at a minimum. This has resulted in many areas with an effort to find solutions to the problem. Green construction is one such solution.

Just what is green building? Is it some hippie concept? Nope. It is the idea of building efficient energy structures while minimizing environmental impact. This can be for housing or large buildings such as The Solaire in New York City. Efficiency is about energy control. Many green buildings filter their air through plant life. They recycle their water. They use recycled materials for building elements like newspapers for insulation to steel from demolished structures.

From a design perspective, green construction philosophy involves incorporating renewable energy platforms. These can include solar panels to provide electricity, strategic plant placement to filter air, and opening windows instead of air conditioning.

Given its relative infancy, green building is somewhat of a vague catch phrase at this time. Nonetheless, it is still a step in the right direction. It represents the facts that we recognize our wasteful habits, and are that we prepared to deal with them.
