Treating Headaches Naturally
|
Approximately 45 million people have regular headaches each year. Do you know how to cope - without medication? Jerry Alexander's article provides some insight and helpful tips. By Jerry Alexander Approximately 45 million people have regular headaches each year. These headaches fall into 5 categories. 1) Tension Headaches: Generally speaking, the common headache is caused by stress and fatigue and is usually related to specific physical, psychological, or emotional issues, and especially to depression. 2) Sinus Headaches: This type of headache is usually brought on by a cold or other congestion, or by sinus infection. 3) Hormonal Headaches: Occur on only one side of the head. Like migraines, they can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and noise. 4) Cluster Headaches: Occur in clusters, generally 1-4 times a day, and can continue over days or even months. 5) Abnormal Headaches: Though rare, headaches can indicate skull or brain abnormalities - tumors, aneurisms, brain abscesses, infections, meningitis, or encephalitis. Look to the obvious first. If you've got a headache, you may need to eat something, or get some sleep, or take more stretch-breaks during the day. You may need a better chair if you're sitting for extended periods. A daily, 10-minute session of vigorous exercise can bring about enough biochemical change to end stress-related headaches. Taking 5 Relaxation techniques have proven remarkably effective in treating headaches. If your day has been overloaded, and you feel a headache developing, work with it: instead of taking an Aspirin, try 'taking 5.' Take a 5-10 minute nap in the sun or some other comforting source of warmth, or if it's hot, in front of the cooling breeze of a fan. If you can, take your nap outdoors in the soothing beauty of nature. To deepen your rest, use deep-breathing techniques, breathing slowly and rhythmically from your diaphragm. Visualization Techniques If your headache persists, use visualization techniques. Visualization is a form of self-hypnosis that can usually make a considerable difference. Here are a couple of specific suggestions. Cool Hand Healing Close your eyes and breathe deeply until you've begun to relax. Then imagine yourself in a bubble of colored light; purple, violet, and blue are good choices. Imagine the light seeping through your skin and into the cells of your body, lifting away your pain. Imagine your body temperature changing to suit your need, either to more warmth or to more coolness. Now, imagine one of your hands immersed in icy cold water, so cold that you can feel your hand losing sensation and going numb. Once your hand feels anaesthetized, place it on the area where your head aches and imagine the numbness moving from your hand into the pain, or try pulling the pain out of your head and into your hand. Stay with it, or repeat the procedure until the pain subsides. This method is also good for cramps, bumps, and bruises. Inner Medication Another popular visualization is an old-fashioned pharmacy filled with remedies. Visualize a gorgeous, dark room that smells good and has mahogany counter tops and shelves with blue, green, and brown bottles containing medications. Look over the shelves and pick the bottle that lights up (like Christmas-tree lights). Visualize detail: take the medication by opening the bottle and swallowing the tablet; notice the water bottle you need to swallow the pill. Or pour a draught into the medicine glass you find on the counter. If an old-fashioned pharmacy doesn't appeal, visualize the perfect bathroom and take something from the medicine cabinet. Use Your Imagination Your unconscious is extremely powerful and doesn't differentiate between inner and outer action. These techniques frequently work as fast as or faster than pharmaceuticals - with no side effects. Make up your own visualization. The key is to give yourself, both literally and imaginatively, a pleasant environment that encourages relaxation.
